Ambience Healthcare AI Funding Hits $1.25B After $243M Series C
Ambience Healthcare AI funding news is making waves in the healthcare tech sector. Based in San Francisco, Ambience has officially joined the unicorn club. After closing a $243 million Series C funding round, its valuation is now up to $1.25 billion. The round was led by Oak HC/FT and Andreessen Horowitz, along with participation from current investors.
Founded back in 2020, Ambience offers an AI-powered platform for clinical documentation and coding, which is designed to reduce clinical burnout by automating time-consuming administrative tasks like billing, prior authorization, and note-taking.
The Burden of Documentation
As per the co-founder and CEO of Mike Ng, clinicians face “tens of thousands of daily clicks and keystrokes” to provide care. On average, only a quarter of their time is spent with the patients; the rest of the day is consumed by burdensome administrative work.
With the use of ambient AI, the platform automatically captures and processes clinical encounters. This streamlines workflows across multiple specialties, ranging from primary care to complex fields like oncology and cardiology.
Why AI is Needed Now More Than Ever
As per Ng, automation frees up valuable time and allows practitioners to focus on direct patient care.
“Health systems need AI now more than ever before.”
Ng even points to a “perfect storm” of healthcare challenges which are lurking around the corners, such as:
- 10,000 seniors aging into Medicare daily
- Projected shortage of 100,000 healthcare workers in the next decade
- Financial pressures from tightening Medicare, Medicaid, and NIH budgets
Performance That Outpaces Competitors
In clinical adoption rates, Ambience Healthcare AI funding outperforms rivals like Abridge, DeepScribe, and Suki.
A 6-month Cleveland Clinic study compared five ambient scribe tools, with Ambience emerging as the top choice:
- 80% clinician utilization rate (double the next best)
- Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 87 after improvements
- Competitors’ NPS scores are near zero or negative
Nikhil Buduma, co-founder and chief scientist, attributes the success to Ambience’s unified platform approach, integrating pre-visit prep, scribing, and revenue cycle workflows for consistency and compliance.
Building for Complex Specialties
Even though the majority of AI tools these days are focused on more straightforward specialties, Ambience is heavily invested in fine-tuning its platform for complex care settings. This includes:
- Partnering with providers like the Cleveland Clinic
- Collaborating with tech companies such as OpenAI
- Expanding its internal AI and clinical research team to improve medical understanding and real-world performance
What’s Ahead
Despite being a part of the unicorn club, Ng claims Ambience is “still in the first inning” and has “so much more to build.” Without a doubt, the company is focused on deepening its presence in healthcare, with no plans for an exit.
