Deloitte Pays Rhode Island $5 Million After Ransomware Attack

Hands giving & receiving money - United States Dollars (or USD) bills

A ransomware attack compromised the state’s RIBridges portal in December, and as a result, Deloitte had to pay Rhode Island $5 million as compensation. This massive breach turned all vital public assistance programs upside down, and in turn, affected thousands of residents as it compromised their data. The ransomware gang managed to steal sensitive data including Social Security numbers and bank details, out of which, some of the information had also appeared on the dark web.

Furthermore, Deloitte is also providing financial support for unexpected expenses such as for a data breach call center, credit monitoring, and identity protection. The firm’s financial support was highly acknowledged by Governor Dan McKee.

To be precise, approximately over 650,000 residents were affected by this attack, as they relied on RIBridges for Medicaid, SNAP, along other assistance programs. Over 2,000 HealthSource RI customers immediately required direct enrollment with insurance providers in January and February, to maintain coverage and to ensure that they are protected against the heavy costs related to cyberattacks and data breaches.

The state is now working on a gradual relaunch of RIBridges, as the company is now facing lawsuits for alleged negligence in protecting sensitive data. Implementing stronger cybersecurity measures is a crucial part of the plan to prevent any future attacks.

This attack is nothing less than a strong reminder for businesses handling sensitive consumer data to invest in robust cybersecurity policies to minimize potential reputational and financial damage. It also highlights the crucial need for enhanced cybersecurity systems to protect personal and sensitive data that can lead to identity theft. In today’s digital age, it’s better to be safe than sorry!
